So first off, I'm 34 weeks. I had an ultrasound on Tuesday and the tech said my son was head down and he was 4lbs. 2 oz...which sounds great to me. Well..for the last day or too I've been getting these sharp pains in my vagina. Is this a sign that he's dropping?? B/c I'm assuming his little head is pushing on something to cause the sharp pains!!

It could mean this but 34 weeks could be a little too soon to drop (of course every pregnancy is different). It could also mean that he is stretching or wiggling to get a more comfy position (not much room in there anymore) and putting more pressure on your lower uterus and cervix. My daughter did this alot towards the end of my pregnancy. It felt like a sharp stabbing sensation in my cervix and inside my vagina. Hope this helps.

It is his head hitting your cervix. This will cause dilation eventually. When a baby 'drops' it is when his head is actually engaged in the pelvis. (alot of peopel think it is when the baby gets to be head down and a bit lower in the abdomen, but this is incorrect and very misunderstood). Your baby can be head down all the way up until labor. Your stomach may look lower, and everythign, btu it is caused by teh baby being in a different position. Your baby is probably in the -3 station, which means, head down and heading in teh right direction, but not engaged at all in teh actual pelvic cavity. When a baby has dropped, it is at a 0 station and fully engaged in teh pelvis. When a baby is crowning during delivery it is at a +4 station. So your baby is still floating aroun in there moving its little head about, making these shapr pains for you. Fun huh? I rememebr those days. It might evenget to feel liek super sharp pains "zapping" you down there. Even though this hurts and is uncomfortable, just know that it is necessary for your baby to do this...and it is helping you dilate and everythign. By no means does this mena that everytime you feel a sharp pain that you are dilating or anythign (dont want to scare you)...and it si normal to be feelign this at 34 weeks.

Good luck, and congrats!

It can be. Generally its caused by varicose veins in the vaginal region, which you get during pregnancy due to the weight of the uterus in the pelvis.

My son was fully engaged in the pelvis at 30 weeks. Its never too early.. lol. 4 pounds is a good size baby, so its fair to assume he's head down for good, and if he drops, all the better.

You are correct. He is probably dropping into your pelvis and getting ready for the final ride. The sharp pains are probably caused by him moving his head around. Take it easy.

Good luck.

Could be. He could be getting in position. At this point almost everything causes some pain. Congrats and good luck.

That could be from him dropping or it could be things in there that are still growing. It could very well be him dropping though. Good luck and congrats!
