who lives with us stole a case of smirnoff ice out of our basement that was intended for a dinner I was having yesterday. Consequently, I had nothing to offer my guests alchohol wise. His mother brushed it off but I and my husband are FURIOUS! Any retaliation suggestions?

I would confront that whore of a nephew of yours and tell him to fork over some cash for what he did. And if he doesn't, beat him. Beat him like Sophia did to Squeak in The Color Purple!!!

being it's every ones' house you sound like your kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have to assume you have pulled the mother aside and spoken to her about his stealing your things and she is ineffective. So really the question is, now what? The only way to turn him in is to call the police when you know hes been drinking and gets behind the wheel, have his license plate number and call from a pay phone. He isn't learning his lesson at home with mom making it o.k. for the DUI. Maybe some jail time will help him now so he can become the grown up he needs to be, he's only 18 if he doesn't get straightened out now, when?

if the kid is stealing from you..you need to tell him you know that he is stealing and explain to him how embarrassing it was fro you to have guests over and went to get your smirnoff and it was gone..and you had to come back and say it was gone.
and you need to tell him that if continues this behavior hes going to have to find elsewhere to live because your husband will not tolerate it
Does his mom live with you too? If she does or does not he is still living in your house and he has to follow your rules..make do a crap load of house work..or summin to repay the smirnoff because an 18 year old probably doesnt have 40 dollars laying around

I would do what the first answerer said and then also buy a few bottles of the smirnoff or beer and open them and empty 1/4 out then have your husband pee in them and tighten the lids back on them, put them back in the fridge and leave them there till he takes them and after he drinks them all, you can laugh your butt off. Make sure before doing this your husband drinks a lot of water to lighten the color of the pee. Have fun and let us know what you are planning to do.

He is 18 and living with you... last I heard it's "my house, my rules" so therefore, by default he no longer has privileges in YOUR house. I assume he works? Why isn't he living with his parents? He seems to be able to get away with a lot... and no consequences... time to make Jr. move back with his enabling mom... (who seems to have pawned him off on you).
Retaliation only works if the other people realize they have done something wrong... it doesn't seem like hes got a mom (don't mention the dad here) that makes him standup to his mistakes....they will never learn from mere 'retaliation' .. time for him to learn to live on his own ... pack his stuff and put it out on the curb. EVICT HIM...
Your house, YOUR Rules...

As an 18 year old i could alllmost see myself doing the same but he's your nephew so that's a little messed up. Tell him you're leaving for the night and leave another bottle filled with vinager up or by nonalchoholic beer and let him think he's gettin drunk and laugh at him after the fact for the next year

If a person that steals lives in your house you have few options. GET locks for everything or kick the dude out.. if he has no respect for you or your properity then he doesnt deserve to live there

Why don't you send him back to your sister? That should be double retaliation and no more potential underage drinking and legal ramifications if someone is DUI and injures or kills someone while driving.

I would confront the mother and insist that she pay the money. Also, I would mention the cigs too. It sounds like he is a repeat offender.

I would tear holes in all of his boxers(and pull the seams so they seem a little to snug on him), underwear, make big humongus holes in his socks, put shaving cream all over his bed, oh, put shaving cream in his shoes, if he has condoms, put holes in them, and t-p his whole room and when he notices and says,"Did you do this??" Then you say,"Well, now we're even"(very calmly!)
Good luck on gettin payback on that son of a b*tch!
