the previous answer is correct, not all lawyers make alot of money. lawyers who do make alot of money do so because they are within a large firm and have made general partner or share partner. even these people will never be bill gates or anything.
the lawyers who make less work for the government or have left the legal field altogether. its very common for someone to practice law for a short time and then use thier degree for a more non-traditional position.

and, just a side note from the previous answer, small claims court is the one place where the plaintiff and the defendant are prohibited from having an attorney at all.

Not all lawyers make a lot of money so don't think that once you become a lawyer the money pours in. If you, as a lawyer, become associated with a reputable law firm and get the high profile cases (that is once you've been established and have made a good name for yourself) then you make very good money.
You can also be a lawyer who tries only small claims type cases and make a lot less money. It's one of those careers that you either make it, or not.
