Both she and the baby will be fine. Although it's better if no one smokes at all, the whole smoking thing is way overblown. Smoking gets the blame for most cancers these days, to the point that many people completely ignore any other possible causes of cancer.
A bad diet is worse then smoking for a person's health then smoking could ever be.
1/8 of all medical expenses in the US is attributed to diabetes alone. Smoking related expenses didn't even make the list.

Actually it does harm the baby a little but actually I've heard from a doctor that if you smoke before you find out your pregnant and just cut back while you are pg then chances are the baby will be fine. I don't smoke either and think it is sad when you see a pregnant woman smoking but I'm sure she is trying to do the best she can. You should tell her though that she shouldn't smoke around the baby after it is born.

Personally I think she is fine. I am 17 weeks pregnant and I just quit smoking about a month ago. Before I quit smoking I talked to my doctor about my smoking, he said that it is associated with lower birth weight, and asthma. I have a friend that smoked throughout her whole pregnancy and her baby is fine, her doctor even advised her not to quit. Sometimes quitting is worse for the baby. Either way if she is only having one a day, I wouldn't be concerned.

Hi. I have had a lot of friends myself who smoked (even a pack a day) during their pregnancies. While I personally never understood this decision, I have not seen a negative outcome in their children. However, one would ask, why take the risk? If you stop completely, you can start back up after baby is born - hopefully outside of your home only. Anyway, another thing I have learned in life is that you cannot make another adult do what you think is right. She is gonna have to make this decision on her own. You are a caring friend, though.

More than 40% of pregnant women in the 70s smoked a pack a day while pregnant. Smoking is associated primarily with smaller babies, but all those studies were based on women who smoked a pack or more a day. I too think that it is a good idea to quit altogether, and maybe she will after the baby is born. In the meantime, mind your own business.

i dont get why she even bothers smoking one smoke a day, are you sure shes not lying about how many? you'll get lots of different answers here, people saying they smoked two packs a day while pregnant and their babies are fine blah blah blah. the reality is your taking a chance. i do believe its hyped up a bit much in media but facts are facts, and cigarettes CAN cause healthy problems with the baby, i believe low birth weight is the main problem. one a day PROBABLY wont hurt the baby, but im betting shes smoking more than that. if not, then thats pretty sh***y of her just for one smoke that isn't going to do anything for her. try googling it, print out the info and give it to her, and tell her your just concerned and wanted her to know all the facts, and if she continues to smoke you wont raise the question again. hopefully she wont be to offended.
good luck, dont worry

Addiction is a hard thing to understand if you haven't been through it yourself. I am not justifying her actions, but I believe that one cigarette a day is better than two. Obviously, none is the best, but some people just can't quit.

Smoke while pregnant is NOT fine whether you smoke 5 or just 1 a day. Smoking isn't even good while NOT pregnant. I think you should ask your friend if she would quit, not just for her sake but for her unborn baby.

I smoke and the doctor told me along as I cut down to only a few smokes a day, then I will be ok. The stress of trying to quit is worse than smoking.
