I'd like to know what your ONE favorite horror movie is. I'm interested in a movie that is:
(a) more than ten (10) years old (so none of these recent movies like Hostel, Saw, or Final Destination)
(b) NOT a spoof (a la Scary Movie)
(c) NOT a slasher film (Halloween, Friday 13th, Freddy, etc)
Also, I'd like to know "why" you like that movie; please give me a few details!
Please don't type a list. I'm not interested in a catalog of horror films. I want your ONE movie and why you like it!
Thanks in advance to all.

i do have to say that i like the recent horror movies to come out lately...but to choose the one film that i can watch over and over...that still scares me...it would have to be John Carpenter's The Thing...
came out in 1982...it gives you mystery...suspense...gore (but not so much as choping a foot off)...and no cursing...its amazing how a horror movie can actually be scary without boobs or droping the F bomb...great classic 80's horror movie...it leaves you with memorable scenes...the types of scenes that when you see that actor again in another movie you automatically remember them for what happened in The Thing...

Let's see... A couple of these might be 2-3 years past the 10 years requested but here goes: The Mist Deep Impact Dante's Peak Titanic Shawshank Redemption The Haunting Seabiscuit The Phantom Menace The Rock If I were to describe "why" those are my favorites, this response would be too long for the likes of YA. I will just say that I loved them all and they are movies I can enjoy for years to come (I can't wait to see The Mist again...it comes out on DVD 3/25). Sadly, most of the movies in the past 5 years have not been very good. There were a few in there but they are vastly outnumbered by the bad ones. EMT

The original film of "The Haunting".
Compare it to the modern remake with all its special effects and you can see what modern filmmakers have forgotten about what really constitutes horror. The old film is geniunely scary (watch it alone at night and see for yourself), and yet you never SEE anything. Only HEAR it.
The new one is loaded with effects and you see everything and it is BORING. Not at all scary, no suspense, nothing.
The B&W "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" with the pods in the truck ending is another great classic. That's a close second.

The Exorcist
It doesn't try to scare you by cranking up the gore factor like today's horror movies. That film was psychologically scary. I especially like the use of subliminal haunting when they flash a face on the screen. In high school, we used the slow-motion feature on the VCR to watch that scene and it just goes all black for instant with this eerie white face. Freaky.

I have to list two. The first is the original B/W, THE THING (Original title: Who Goes There). Excellent cast, dialog and visuals (before special effects junk).
The second: the only Dracula movie worth watching (others are just terrible) and that is NEAR DARK. A group of vampires living together, all ages and issues. The bar fight scene with the barmaid's end is very intense.

Maybe your wanting to know what's the best horror/ suspense thriller I've ever seen in my lifetime. I would say the sixth sense because it had me seriously tripping afterwords. I was wondering were there dead people around. I tripped about this movie for a couple of weeks. I liked Rose Mary's Baby as well because it's insane to phantom. The Exorcist scared me until I was 25.
Can you remember the movie that came on one the 3 major networks back in the early 80's about nuclear devastation? That scared me as a young person as well. 1408 scared the sh** out of my girlfriend. You will not want a hotel room for awhile after this one.

It would have to be the original Frankenstein.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021884/fullcredits#cast
With Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster. I saw this at a very young age on Saturday Afternoon TV. It was the very first movie that made me think beyond the black and white of "good" and "bad". That, although the monster might have been created in an unacceptable way, the monster itself was as human as anyone until people drove it to murder.
I credit this movie with my intense desire to know all sides of a conflict, and to find the truth for myself.
Sure, compared to the horror movies of today, this one comes off as a PG13 "just a little violence" movie. But it still makes you THINK. And if it can continue to encourage young minds to delve into the CHARACTER of people, instead of judging them by their looks alone, then it is still worth watching!

I would say "Night of the Living Dead"....Their coming to get you Barbara"!!!!! a true classic....that black and white horror film is a classic....I first saw it on Halloween in school....(uncut Version).....I like the movie because it made you think....what if this happened for real?.....What if there were some kinda scientific way for dead people to come to life to eat flesh.....its one movie I wouldn't let kids see though.....but in all was a great classic horror film.....makes you wonder how people can be when there is a catastrophe......

Signs was a really good PG-13 horror movie. It was really spooky and akward. Everything just seemed so isolated making you feel alone and afraid while watching it. Even in the daylight there are scenes that scared the **** outta me. It wasn't just eerie, it goes all the way to being scary with the darkness surrounding the characters. VERY GOOD! By the way, 1408 just came out and its getting really good feedback unlike all the other amateur horror films within the last 5 years so I recommend checking out 1408 as well.

"Seven" without hesitation this is my #1 pick for so many reasons. The cast is brilliant. Brad Pitt did an extremely impressive job. Morgan Freeman is simply fantastic & is the calm to Brad's storm. They played off eachother so well.
I loved how they showed them bonding, especially when Morgan went to Brad's house for dinner & meets his wife & they have such a pleasant time. It is such a key part in the end & painful when Morgan knew Gwen was pregnant & Brad didn't.
Then you have the impeccable Kevin Spacey, who was just getting noticed for his superb acting. They all played off of eachother so well.
The plot was so detailed & thought provoking & utterly frightening. The concept of basing his killings on the seven deadly sins was ingenious. It sure wasn't short of gore, but the psychological scare was intense. When Brad yells, "What's in the box, what's in the box" & you wait to see what happens, you're on the edge of your seat.
It's a great movie to watch more than once just to catch so many intricate details.
