I once purchased very expensive black shorts with purple sequins and patterned cut out detailing on the sides. Thinking I looked fantastic I wore them out to a posh party and soon realised that the stares and gasps were not those of envy or admiration for my fashion sense. They were so awful realisation having dawned I left early. I could not find anywhere else suitable to wear them.

I then wore them for gardening. Loads of my childrens friends and neighbours called by for a laugh. Several days later I discarded them. By this time having got a rather nice tan from the sun I had patterned detailing half way down my legs and purple melting sequins scattered over the garden. I had to cover up for the rest of the summer until the tan had completely gone.

What awful fashion item have you purchased and tried to wear out in some way to justify the expense?

I stick with classic styles and refuse to pay no more than $20 for clothing. Actually, anything over $10 is a splurge.

However, there are the Converse All Stars I bought in NYC for $20 about a month ago. Hoping and assuming that they were as good of quality as what they were beffore Nike bought them, and literally needing new shoes, I went with them. By the end of the week (I bought them on a Tuesday), they felt more broken in and beat up than my All Stars that I bought 10-15 years ago in high school. I will never buy Nike or All Star again. I should have listened to my mother when she suggested I get a pair of white sneakers at Wal-Mart like the ones she did well with for the past couple of years.

While I still want to write Converse and compalin, it's not the end of the world. I'll just stick with my loafers for which I paid $3, new, four years ago.

When I was in high school the rave was shiny athletic shoes. I worked and saved to buy this pair that was(not really expensive now, but at the time it was ...) $95. When I got them home and tried them on, one shoe was an entire size smaller than the other.

I bought them at a store in New Orleans that was boutique-style, and I lived in Baton Rouge (about 1 hour and a half away). My parents could not bring me back there in time to return them, so I was stuck with them.

I wore them to school every day; in between classes I would go to the bathroom to take the one small shoe off because my feet hurt so bad!

Luckily, that trend only lasted a short time!

a faux suede winter coat with fuzzy lamb like trim that made me look like a quaterback. Very warm coat...... but not very figure flattering by any means, and pricey so I felt the need to get my money's worth.
