Considering a typical workday from 7am to 6pm the following day, how do you engage your astronomical interests/hobbies on weekdays? Any secrets or helpful ideas for observing without interfering with job performance the next day?

Yeah, with a telescope, .. but if you stay up too late then it can interfere with work the next day.

Take a nap after work and before going out.

Have a good alarm clock so you don't oversleep.

Maybe change your work schedule, if you can, with guidance from the boss or manager.

Have some one photograph celestial bodies and phenomena for you to look at on weekends.

Stars are easy to see when you leave urban areas. Find a place away from the city where you can safely pull off the road, while not trespassing on property, to view personally.

If you don't have tons of time, try hubblesite.org and select Explore Astronomy, followed by 'Tonight's Sky'. It will hone your star search and help you find the cool stuff in the sky during the night.

considering days are longer now, I'm going to guess you will definitely be able to start your gazing around 10pm.

Remember, less ambient light = more stars visible.

I have gotten up before dawn to observe on occasion, especially for the close opposition of Mars in 2003. I don't do that very often because I am not a morning person, but on occasion, if there is something you really want to observe, it is possible to do. I found that getting up one or two hours early was enough. And staying up a couple hours after it gets dark is no problem, as long as you aren't also planning to get up early the next morning. But I find my biggest obstacle is family obligations, not job obligations.

in summer this would be tricky, you would have to go out just for a bit at night, maybe with just some binoculars, go outside and see what you can and come back inside and go to bed.

i would say tone down the observing during the week, it sucks but hey you gotta make money to. just do some quick gazing during the week, even naked eye stargazing is nice to do. then on the weekend do the hardcore up all night messier marathon

Around here, you can see Venus, Saturn, and perhaps Jupiter (if you stay up a little longer) just shortly after sun down. The best way to see the stars is either at sundown or at sunrise. You can plan your sleep schedule accordingly.
