Evil like that is incomprehensible. And yet it has always existed alongside of humanity. You could say that it is part of the human condition. How can we try to make sense of such a horrifying act, when none of us can understand what could drive a man to kill the ones he supposedly loves?
Sometimes I think of it in an evolutionary perspective. Like, how does it benefit the human species to have a man kill his child and the mother of his child? He has taken his offspring out of the gene pool. Why? If the goal of human evolution is the continuation of the species, then he has made a wrong move and his behavior is just defective (evolutionarily speaking).
But if the goal of evolution is the improvement of the species, what does it mean that his offspring are out of the gene pool? It means that his murderous traits will not be carried on. It means that whatever defect he has that caused him to do this, it won't be passed on. Is that a good thing for the species? Who knows. Maybe there is some kind of genetic imperative, like a self-extincting thing, programmed into us. I mean, what else would drive a cop (someone who should obviously know better) to murder?
I think sometimes of a couple I knew. They had two toddlers. Both the mom and the dad started developing some pretty serious mental problems like schizophrenia and having bad health issues with some inherited diseases like diabetes and thyroid problems. One day the mom was away and the dad slacked off a little in watching the kids. Boom, before you know it, both of those toddlers had drowned in the neighbors' pool. A tragic, heartbreaking, devastating loss of two innocent, beautiful kids. But over the years since those kids died, their parents have only gotten sicker. I've had to wonder how those kids would have turned out if they had survived, and how having such unhealthy parents would have affected them. Maybe it was God's will that they would die young and innocent and not have to suffer from the inherited diseases of their parents.
I'm not trying to say that our genes or evolution are pulling *all* the strings. I don't know what was wrong with that guy that he could do that. And of course regardless of what his motivation was, the mother and her child are completely innocent and did not deserve to lose their lives.
I wish that murder, jealousy, and war were not part of the human condition. I know a lot of us want to turn away and pretend that those ugly things are not human. But they have been going on for all time. I think it is better to stare them in the face and try to understand than to try to deny that these problems exist.

Being that I am not a man, nor have a I ever murdered anyone, especially not a pregnant woman, I can't give you an honest answer. I would bet, though, that all of the reasons you mentioned are true in different cases.
My father poisoned my mother while she was pregnant with one of my brothers. He was stillborn at about 6 months of pregnancy. This goes back to the mid-70's and my father was never prosecuted. (He was extremely abusive, and the rest of us grew up in foster care.) Some people are just SICK.

Apparently the guy was married and this was going to be his second child with his mistress. It could have been all sorts of reasons, didn't want his wife to find out, the mistress told him she was on birth control etc. etc. Only he knows for sure.

You'd have to ask each individual man. However, this is more incentive for women to use birth control. The "devil" has nothing to do with it.
