Muhammad Ali showed over the top confidence when he went into a fight. Many boxers stagger around the ring after a few rounds. Not Ali. He was still light on his feet (Float like a butterfly). He also claimed while other boxers had their faces bashed up, he stayed pretty (also like a butterfly)
When he punched, though, he got great power in a small area. That stung like a Bee
Bruce Lee (Kung Fu) loved to learn from Ali fights, but would run the reel to reel film back the front to lead with his right for fast powerful jabs.
But this is a question in the Psychology section.
His claim was to beat his opponent before he even got in the ring.
Firstly, that other guy would hear media hype building up Ali.
When he stepped out of the changeroom, the crowd was loudest for Ali (why would the opponent's fans go there to see him loose - so most were Ali fans shouting).
It also helped Ali believe it himself to keep looking cool when he was aching as much as the other guy.

This quote, though one of his more famous, was not what made him the world's most adored athlete. It was just one of many clever, amusing and invariably justifiable boasts made by the former Cassius Clay. Who can forget that fabulous, supremely confident roar, "I am the greatest!"?
Ali's consumate skill and lifelong dedication to boxing, his surprise strategies and spectacular showmanship in the ring, his athleticism, endurance and integrity during bouts, his pride in his racial heritage, his consistently respectful attitude towards his fellow human beings and his willingness to go to jail rather than compromise his private-life anti-war principles... all these combined are what earned him the admiration and loyalty of millions of people around the world. Even if you knew nothing about boxing, you knew everything about Ali.
As for the last part of your question, if Ali is the equivalent of a butterfly in his footwork and fitness, and a bee in the punch he packed, then by comparison I am just a humble worker ant, toiling away for the colony and hoping not to get trodden on by a very big foot, lol.

the quote didn't make him famous the fact he was a great boxer made him famous, the quote was just part of his arrogant and obnoxious personality.
It meant he floated around the ring because he was quick, and then he hit you hard.
I liked him as an athelete but he was hardly a great man, if I'm not mistaken he was a draft dodger, pretty cowardly for a supposed tough guy. Elvis went to war why was Muhammed
Ali too good to serve his country?
Don't give me religion, because he beat people down for a living so it wasn't being a pacifist.
it makes me wonder why I answered this question

It makes me think of Vanilla Ice's naff lyric "slice like a ninja, cut like a razor blade".
Also nice to think of a boxer holding a stung finger up and bawling like a baby...

In term's of Ali, it means be graceful as you are beating the organs of the digestive tract out of a guy.
To everyone else (including myself), it should mean be graceful yet aggressive (or perhaps passionate) in your tasks.
