My Fiance and I are planning on getting a convertible crib. it has 4 stages crib, toddler bed, daybed, and full sized bed. However we plan on having another child sometime within the next 2-3 years so we will need another crib then. It is a good idea to just buy the crib and use it and then when the new baby comes to buy another crib or should we get a cheaper one that doesn't convert and save it for the new baby and buy a regular bed for our other child?

I would buy them both a convertible crib. They are both going to need a crib and when they get older a regular bed.

Maybe you could buy a bassinet when you have the next baby. You can use it for 3-5 months until baby learns to roll over. Bassinets are cheaper and take up less space.

Then you could buy another bed for your first child and let the baby use the convertible crib when he/she grows out of the bassinet.

This plan would give you a much longer time to wait and buy another bed. It might also save you money because buying 2 convertible cribs is more expensive than buying 1 convertible crib, 1 regular bed (or toddler bed) and a bassinet (I got my bassinet for $40).

It seems like they make more convertible cribs than the old kind that don't convert these days, but I definitely would not spend all that money on two separate sets when you are planning to have more than one child. I'd buy one good/solid/sturdy crib (don't care whether or not it's convertible) and invest in one great dresser that you can put a changing pad on top and use as a changer. And when the next baby comes and/or this baby grows up I'd put him/her into a toddler or big kid bed and buy a dresser to go with that. A little actually goes a long way.

Personally, I'd go ahead with the convertible. Depending on when you plan to have the second child, you may need the toddler bed before you need a full size twin for the child. I put my daughter in a toddler bed when she started trying to climb the sides of her crib, at about 24 months. Toddler beds are called such because they are not only smaller, but lower to the ground, reducing the likelihood of injury from falling out of bed. If you choose not to use the convertible, be prepared to invest in either a toddler bed, or a fancy twin size for your child that has a low, safe frame.

that is entirely up to you!
i plan on getting a convertable bed, because it seems more practical than having to buy a toddler bed later on.
in 2-3 years there will probably be something better on the market that youll want to get.
