You bet! and smart move getting the book(s) BEFORE the fish. Too many people do it the other way around. I'm going to give you links to a few I think are really good for the beginning aquarium keeper. These cover a range of prices and you may want more than one of them. Of course, they should be available through your local book store if not on the shelf, then by special order.

Until you can get a book in hand, here's a link to two websites that offers good quality basic aquarium keeping information as well as some more advanced info as well. You won't go wrong with the informaiton from either of these sites.

This is their page of links to the articles and other content about starting an aquarium.

The first page of several about beginning with an aquarium.

Hope that helps and feel free to email me if I can help further.

Welcome to the hobby!

Exotic Aquarium Fishes by William T. Innes was first published over 60 years ago but is still a great book for a beginner. Also check out the TetraPress A Fishkeepers Guide To... series.

When I started fish as a hobby...I bought several books. Most are not helpful enough and others just confuse you even more. A great in between and a heck of a help BEFORE you start buying is my still helpful and favorite! the simple guide to Freshwater AQUARIUMS by David E. Boruchowitz. And it covers mostly tropical fish...mentions cold water...and doesn't talk about saltwater. He covers care, equipment, and need to know knowledge.
