Why do South Koreans dislike Japanese people?

Korea was under Japanese rule from the period when it was a part of the Japanese Empire from 1910 to 1945. During this time, Japan did its best to eliminate all of Korea's individuality and culture and supliment its own.

Japan's involvement began with the 1876 Treaty of Ganghwa during the Joseon Dynasty of Korea and increased with the subsequent assassination of Empress Myeongseong at the hands of Japanese agents in 1895. It culminated with the 1905 Eulsa Treaty and the 1910 Annexation Treaty, both of which were eventually declared null and void by both Japan and South Korea in 1965.

Japanese control of Korea ended with the surrender of Japan to the Allied forces in 1945 at the end of World War II. The Korean Peninsula was subsequently divided into North and South Koreas. The legacy of the occupation remains in continuing disputes between Japan and the two Koreas.

In Korea, this period is called the Japanese Forced Occupation Period (일제 강점기) or Japanese Imperial Period (일제시대). In Japan, this period is called The Japanese Colonial era in Korea (日本植民地時代の朝鮮). Sometimes it is also referred to as the Wae Jeong (Hangul: 왜정, Hanja: 倭政), or "Japanese rule", derived from the name of the Wa Nation (pronounced "wae" in Korean) of ancient Yayoi Japan.

Hard feelings still persist among many of the older Koreans.

I'll add a little bit to rahkokwee's answer above:

During the Japanese occupation, many Koreans were not only limited in their freedoms, but also experienced many hardships. One terrible thing the Japanese government engaged in was military prostitution, sending Korean women to Japanese military men to act as prostitutes. The Japanese military had a horrendous record of rape during the 1930s and 1940s.

Additionally, a less physically painful but still highly offensive act was the forced "Japanization" of Koreans. Koreans were forced to speak in Japanese and many were forced to take Japanese names. By having to take Japanese names, Koreans were symbolically forced to change their identities, something tragic and shameful to them.

Additionally, the anger became worse and worse over time because the Japanese government refused to apologize and, in most cases, even acknowledge that many of these things happened. Only because the older generation is dying, and taking their experience with them, is this bitterness slowly fading away.
