Among birds, for instance, studies show that 10 to 15 percent of female western gulls in some populations in the wild are homosexual. Females perform courtship rituals, like tossing their heads at each other or offering small gifts of food to each other, and they establish nests together. Occasionally they mate with males and produce fertile eggs but then return to their original same-sex partners. Their bonds, too, may persist for years.
Among mammals, male and female bottlenose dolphins frequently engage in homosexual activity, both in captivity and in the wild. Homosexuality is particularly common among young male dolphin calves. One male may protect another that is resting or healing from wounds inflicted by a predator. When one partner dies, the other may search for a new male mate. Researchers have noted that in some cases same-sex behavior is more common for dolphins in captivity.
Male and female rhesus macaques, a type of monkey, also exhibit homosexuality in captivity and in the wild. Males are affectionate to each other, touching, holding and embracing. Females smack their lips at each other and play games like hide-and-seek, peek-a-boo and follow the leader. And both sexes mount members of their own sex.

Yes they can. Same sex couples of many species go through pair bonding rituals and live together for life. Homosexuality is important for the survival of species although it seems counter-intuitive.
More than 50 years ago, Konrad Lorenz observed geese in the wild and noted that there were a few same-sex couples of male geese. These did everything together including all the pair-bonding rituals and mating. During the breeding season, they took a female and mated with her. With two males and one female to protect the goslings, they had a much greater success rate with raising the young to fledging than the usual pairs.
Female pairings have been observed in many species including terns. Both females lay eggs after mating with a male but the two females act as a pair and usually raise more young than single females.
In some species, only the alpha male has breeding rights with the females. Younger males often pair up, sometimes for life. They help to protect the family and find food for the young. This promotes breeding success.
Homosexual activity in the wild has been observed in over 400 species. It is a perfectly normal part of sexuality.

No because the concept of homosexuality does not exist in the animal kingdom. When you witness animals of the same sex humping each other it is a sign of Dominance not sexual preference. These animals will still mate with others of the opposite sex and not think anything about it. The whole thing is a display of dominance not homosexuality.

The answer is no. Yes, there are animals who have exhibited what to the layman could look like homosexual behavior. In reality, this is not homosexual behavior at all.
There are documented cases when mice and goats have exhibited mating calls and have attempted to mate with individuals of teh same sex. But in all of these instances, one factor is always present: a decrease in the other gender's population. In all cases that have been documented of "homosexual behavior in animals", there have been several factors involved: a) they have been deprived naturally or by the "researchers" of contact with the other gender; b) the researchers views tend to favor the point of view that homosexuality is freely found throughout nature, which is a personal bias and not a fact.
Keep in mind that only humans derive pleasure from sexual relations. Animals do not, since they have no understanding of the concept of pleasure. When animals mate, it is because they are attempting to procreate and maintain the species' viability, not because they just feel like it. :
Homosexuality seems to be a uniquely human trait, linked to this fact: that humans can derive pleasure from sex.

No. What many people witness and think they are seeing is actually a form of dominance behavior. There is a lot of myth associated with this phenomena. Also, animals in zoos and wildlife parks do NOT exhibit the same behaviors as in the wild. Animals in prison behave very differently.
There has been no credible research done on this topic. One can understand why. There is no reason to.
Remember. animals have a driving instinctive behavior. Prime concern is the survive, second is the reproduce. Ask yourself. What forces in nature and evolution allow for an animal to have sex without results. You see it the real world when something does not make sense it just simply does not happen.

Homosexual behavior in animals has been widely observed, but little study has been done on the subject because it's often dismissed as an "aberration".

Well I have heard of animals displaying "Dominance" that way, but I've never heard of a male animal preferring another male animal. That is, I never heard of one animal that restricts it's sexuality to the same sex by choice. Homosexuality doesn't guarantee survival of a species.

That is debatable. Exclusively homosexual animals would not produce any offspring, and would obviously die out.
It seems that most claims of animal "homosexual" behavior is a human interpretation of strange behavior among animals kept captive in zoos in an artificial environment with few if any females around. The observed behavior is ambiguous in most cases, with people apparently seeing what they want to see.

Personally, homosexuality appears to be a mental thing more than a real sexual preference. Think about it. If a human is equipped with the normal parts to reproduce normally why owuld they be born homosexual. If it's a mental thing humans develop in their lives then I doubt animals can be homosexual too.
