There is a sewing machine on sale today and I am considering buying it. I used to sew my Barbies's clothes so I'm hoping now in my twenties that I'll manage to make something for myself!! I am tired of paying small fortunes for simple articles of clothing and hoping I can make skirts and dresses for start. Any opinions? Is it worth it? What else can you tell me?

Thank you in advance.

The cost of the sewing machine is 70 Euro or approx. 95 US Dollars or 48 British Pounds. It has a 3 year warranty. It has different sewing settings and features but as a first I'm happy with it even doing a plain stitch for the price it's at. As far as I know they can run quite expensive.

You all have been so wonderful and helpful I don't know which I'll pick for best answer! Want to hear irony? My car broke down so by the time I got to the store the sewing machines which were on sale were sold out! And.. the part that broke in my car will cost as much as the sewing machine would have.. I hope to find another one soon. I liked SniffyDogs option of a used sewing machine. Thing is, I live in Greece so buying a used one, let a lone servicing one, would be tricky as we aren't as well organised here. I'm really inspired to start sewing though and you guys have been great!

You only need 2 stitches - straight and zig zag.

You need to factor in the cost of a yearly tuneup, which can be anywhere from 30 to 90 dollars. Not having the tuneup is the cause of 95% of machine problems. Fooling with the bobbin tension is the cause of the other 5%.

You won't always save money, because there are plenty of clothing bargains if you don't mind using exploited, pollution-causing Chinese slave labor. But you will have a lot more choices.

That seems like a good price.

Well, what does it cost? If the sewing machine and the supplies are really cheap and you can afford it, I say go for it! Everybody needs a good hobby and maybe you could start selling your clothes if they're a big hit and make good money off of that if you want to. But make sure before you buy it to see if you actually have time in your life to do such a thing. I would do the same, so I say go for it! Good luck with your sewing!!! :o)

I personally would go for it! If this is your passion do it! You already know how to use a sewing machine so what is holding you back? I recommend visiting your local fabric stores for some brush-up seminars and do-it-yourself workshops, just to make sure you are up on the latest fashions. You might also look into a local college or university that offers classes in fashion design. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

A sewing machine is always a good thing to have. While the price is good for this one, I might also look at a used one.

The reason being is, they made them so much better and sturdier years ago. You can get them tuned up if needed at Joann's or a sewing machine store for $20 and they last forever.

Go to a place with needles and actual "help". Say you have a Singer with a [ ] needle. Fill in the blank with either "slanted" or "standard straight". If you have your model number, you may be able to double-check with that. If it's a major fabric place, if they have any needles, they will have ones that will work for you. I've gotten needles at Wal-Mart, at Joann's, at Michael's and many just fabric places. I can even get them in the "housewares" area of the local hardware store. I believe Bernina needles are a different length. Choose the needles according to what you will be sewing. Beyond just regular old needles, there are special ball-point needles for sewing knits, there are skinnier needles for sewing fine fabrics, and there are heavier needles for sewing jean denim. You probably won't ever need leather needles, but there are also those for Singers.

If you can afford it ..it is always good to have around.

Fabric and notions are expensive now days, but if you are a good shopper you can find some good fabric marked down. You can even use old clothes that have a quality fabric for things as well.

It is always a good idea to know how to sew. One day if your good enough you might have to make a living hemming things and making things for others as a seamstress.

Go for it!!!!! Not a skill many people have.

Yes! Buy it, and make sure you read the directions on maintenance and operation. Learn from more experienced seamstresses and tailors.

I admire your sense of creativity and adventure, and your willingness to learn a skill to become more self-reliant. I'm sure you will succeed.
