Did it ever work?

Check the drivers for the device; make sure the drivers are installed and the drivers are the most recent for the device. The most recent are on the maker's web site in most cases under a "support" section.

You may have conflicts in drive letter assignment.

Check Computer Management.
Control Panel - Admnistrative Tools - Computer Management

Go to the Disk section and assign your IPOD a drive letter. Make sure that the ipod is formatted for use this way and also that you are not assigning a drive letter (e, f, g etc) which is used by another device. I usually start all my flash drives at Z and slowly work down the alphabet.

Each time you plug the IPOD in after that, the same drive letter will be assigned to it and y ou won't have any conflicts.

It's probably not in Disk mode, and unless it gets mounted in this mode then you can't directly access it, go here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
That will tell you want you want.
