Check the level of your brake fluid in the brake reservoir.
The brake light will also come on as an indicator that you may be low on brake fluid.

When your brakes wear down, the level of fluid in the master cylinder gets lower as the fluid is now in the lines rather than the cylinder. There is a switch in the master cylinder that turns on the brake light when the fluid level drops below a certain point. You can simply add fluid and the light will go off,....however this is not the right way to fix the problem. You need to have the brakes checked and replaced (most likely thee front brakes) If you add fluid and then replace the brakes later,.....when the pistons on the brake calipers are pushed back in,this will push the fluid from in the lines back into the master cylinder. Since you added fluid there is now to much fluid with new brakes and there is no place for the fluid to go. You would have to remove the master cylinder cover when the pistons are pushed back in and let the excess fluid run out. It's easier to just replace the brakes. Thank you, Rob in PA.

Check the brake fluid level. Master cylinders on 85 and newer cars have a sensor on them that warns of low fluid level. If level is OK, then try checking the wires to the ABS sensors at the calipers. Some newer cars use the brake warning light as a "burned out bulb" warning...check your brake lights at the rear of vehicle..do they work?

like many other answered .check brake fluid level ,
could also have come on indicating that the pads are worn to the point that its causing the fluid to be low, so dont just top off the fluid if it is low check and see if the pads are worn , if there is only about and 1/4 " or less change the pads and have the rotors resurfaced

Have you checked your brake fluid level? Low fluid will cause the light to come on.

Brake fluid level is low or sensor is bad--I think Ford had a recall on their sensor's for possibly causing engine fires if the sensor leaks fluid onto the exhaust....better have it checked out ASAP.

You may have a small Hydraulic fluid leak in your brake system, check the fluid level in the reserve, see if it has been going down.
You may also go to a brake shop to have them inspect it, however they may sell you things you do not need.
Good Luck
