Sometime ago I watched the "In the womb" special on National geographic channel. I dont remember the time of the pregnancy this was recorded , but a 3D ultrasound scan, an ultrasound that is able to show the fetus in a lot more detail than we are used to, shows the infant smiling, sucking the thumb and a lot more. Can a child become gassy in the womb? I personally don't think so. When a newborn smiles during his sleep I believe he is dreaming, probably of a time when he was in the womb, warm and cosy and never hungry. I witnessed this with my son, now 18 months old. Those beautifully broad smiles he used to do during his sleep could not have been gas.

I just don't believe in the old wives tale of gas being the causes of smiles. I've seen 3D ultrasounds of babies smiling, and they shouldn't be gassy in momma.
Just because an infant hasn't seen the harsh sides of life doesn't mean they don't know happiness.
So I think its part happiness and part involutary muscle contractions. Just like a baby moves all parts of their bodies, legs arms, they are also testing out their facial muscles.
No matter the cause, isn't it so cute to see them smile?

the correct answers say 'wind'.
newborn babies do not smile for social reasons.. only when they pass wind and it tickles. The only other reason is the occasional light tummy cramp, light enough to grimace into a 'smile' but not strong enough to cry about.
I would like to think they already dream about their pleasant experiences like feeding.. but I think you'd really be grasping at straws :-)

Babies don't yet know about the troubles and trials of this world yet, so they're bound to be smiling are'nt they? even in their sleep. They're happy and comfy.

I have heard people tell me "oh its just gas." I dont believe that. I believe it is a genuine smile. Maybe a good dream of mommy and daddy.

I know the main answer will probably be, "They're gassy". But I also think its a developing babies brain/muscle reaction. Just a thought....
