Thumbs down, thumbs down, The truth hurts but will stand when all else fails. The blame of failure due to colonization is false, and an excuse for failure. I base this on the western hemisphere. All of north and south America, including Canada were colonies, as well, as Hong Kong, India, Vietnam, the list is extensive. The "colonization did it to them" theory, is bull. but, one major differences did and does still exist. Islam. Here comes the hate mail. Much of Africa has been Muslim for over a thousand years, Islam stifles creativity, thought, expansion, any thing that the head Sheik disagrees with is "unholy" Yes there where many resistance to forward thought in Europe and Christianity imposed by the church, not by Christ himself, but in colonies such as Canada, the United States, etc, where the Church of England, broke away from the Holy Roman church, The Church of England, did allow for so many advances. Art, Thought, creativity, peace.
Look at where Islam reigns, how much creative progress do you see? Pakistan? Iran? Only where freedom is achieved do you see success. Russia, achieved what it did, only out of forced competition with the west, forced by its government not to fail.

Africa is still very rich in natural resources, and historically has hosted some of the greatest empires man ever founded. Not just the Egyptians, but Nubia, Mali and Carthage, as well.
The reason that Africa is not "rich" today is because Europeans have looted her for close to 1000 years and after the colonialism of the last 500 years, she is slow in recovering herself. Add to this the inability, fostered by those same colonialist powers, of her member nations not to work together, and she remains what used to be called "third world"
The history of man is Africa. Humanity evolved there and she is a microcosm for the greatest good and the greatest evils that mankind has and can perform upon the world and itself.

They never really needed to be. Civilizations started where conditions were the best. Until the last couple of centuries, the people of Africa had what they needed to survive - a ready source of food, shelter and simple local government. Technology happens when there is a lack in one or more of those areas. The rest of the world needed to develop technology to survive more difficult living conditions. You need clothes and furnaces to survive in the cold northern climates. Where game is scarce, you must learn to farm. Now that scarcity has come to Africa the people are struggling to catch up to those of us who have already had to face these circumstances. Unfortunately, we have moved so far ahead that we now contribute to their difficulties.

It depends on your definition of "rich." If you mean financial riches, there is absolutely no correlation between historical longevity and financial riches.
