I suggest you talk with a veterinarian in your area. S/he may even let you work around the office to learn what the business is all about, and help you choose a school. A military retire is going to have an income based on the rank they achieved and their length of service.

That depends on the area and a number of other different factors. If you are planning on becoming a veterinarian you can normally ask the counselor or advisor over the veterinarian program there. Universities send out surveys to their graduates asking them how much they currently make and those surveys are given to the counselors or advisors of that program to help students decide if that program is right for them. So the advisor of the program should know better than your vet does. If the advisor seems clueless about pay rates, then check out a different program. A program that is run by an advisor that is clueless about the pay rates normally isn't ran very well.
