Locally, a poor woman was put in jail (without the publicity) because she was caught driving erratically while under the influence of alcohol. Her license had been taken away for a few years. When she was stopped for driving without a license her car was impounded, she was taken to jail and she got fines that she cannot afford to pay.
The first Christmas after I got my RN I worked in an intensive care unit in Phila., Pa. A seventeen year old boy worked Christmas eve at a pharmacy until closing then on his way home a drunk driver crushed his vehicle into the medium on 95 and kept on going until found in Delaware passed out. We coded the young boy through the night until he died early Christmas morning. I sat in my car for an hour crying that morning after my shift was over and wishing I chose a different college degree. I worked in trauma centers for many more years witnessing the effects that drug and alcohol has on society.
Asking people to not drive when impaired doesn’t work because some people do not care about others, and are only concerned with his/her own pleasure. Those who lack the ability to care about other people will drive in a drunkin state and then be angry and hostile towards officers and medical staff who interevene.
Personally I would rather see her not drive than wait for her to kill someone. 45 days in jail for driving without a license is a heck of lot less than serving time for manslaughter.
As for Paris, I don’t think she should be treated better than any other person who disrespects our laws.

Its not just a DUI however. Its the Driving With a Suspended License on top of a DUI that landed her in jail.
BTW, I got a DUI when I was 20 when I blew a .04. I got my license suspended and I followed the law and didn't drive for 90 days. Why should she be any different? Couldn't she afford a chauffeur?

O.k. let's set aside her previous DUI, let's even put aside the fact that she'd been caught driving on a suspended liscense once before, wether it was 1 drink or 10 drinks, she was still legally drunk. So yes she should be charged with a DUI, for a second time, and go to jail.
You would be, why should she be any different?

Let's get a few things straight.
One is that driving drunk is the moral equivalent of tossing bricks off of the top of a tall building onto a crowded sidewalk. You don't MEAN to kill anyone, but it's simply a matter of chance whether or not anyone is killed or injured.
Another is that she wasn't put in jail for driving drunk, she was put in jail for violating probation.
All of the arguments against her incarceration amount to one of two things:
A) drunk driving is not a serious offense,
or
B) treat her special because she's Paris Hilton.
I don't happen to believe either. Drunk driving is a very serious matter, and Paris Hilton is a Nobody with a lot of money, totally undeserving of any special treatment.

Yes I knew that and she should have known the laws of the state and should not have been driving. I dont think one drink will make her alcohol level .08 but regardless she got caught and then violated her probation. The limit in Illinois is .08 and even tho I think it is set too low it is the law and as such should be obeyed.

For me, the problem wasn't with her blood alcohol level as much as the fact she thought she didn't have to obey the law. Her license was suspended. She was caught driving. Paris said, "Oops, didn't realize I wasn't supposed to DRIVE on a suspended license." She was let go, but warned not to do it again. So, what does she do? She goes out and gets caught driving on a suspended license again. I think that's just ridiculous.
They tried to give her the commuted sentence and she clearly thought that she shouldn't have to obey the law. So, they sentenced her to jail time. What's not fair about that?

Well I'm sorry for them that they can't even have one drink before driving without breaking the law, where other people could have 5..
But it's the law and they are considered drunk. It's just not safe to be on the road with a .08.

She did not go to jail for DUI. She went to jail for wilfully and repeatedly and contumaciously violating the terms of her probation.

This is a grey area for me. I like to drink but I beleve that one is too many for driving. I also think that one persons .08 isdifferent from anothers. I think that we should just come to the belef that one is too many and start using cabs/ friends to take us to the bar and home.

.08 in California is DUI. Applies to me" applies to you. Now it applies to Paris.
And, like you said, she didn't to jail for DUI, she went to jail for violating her probation-----twice!
