How do i do this? Is there an easier way to alphabetically list all the items (about 2000!) into categories? Like books: adventure; school; science; etc. and then each title in each category alphabetized. It has to be an easy way...right?

r u going to do this programatically? thru a language using pointers? or thru sql using databases?
if u already have the list, why dont u try importing it to an ms excel worksheet and then sorting it there using the ms excel built-in functions

Sorry to do this to you, but you are going to have to provide more info.

Ok, you have a list, but in what software or program does this list reside? Do you need the list to be sorted where it is, or sorted as it is imported or exported somewhere else?

if you can let us know what program and operating system you are using (say Windows XP and MS Word) it would help alot. right now your question cannot be answered meaningfully.

Ok, I would use MS Excel. Type only one piece of data per cell/column. So in Cell A1 put in the title "BookTitle" and then in Cell A2 enter the title.

Cell B1 put the title "Category" and then in Cell B2 type in your category for the book title in cell A2.

Do this for as many categories that you want. Other categories you might want to consider would be is the publication type (Hardcover, paperback, Journal, Magazine etc), maybe the condition, maybe the location of the book. Each one of these should be in it's own cell. Makes sorting much easier.

If you know how to use a true database (mySQL or MS Access) it would be even better, however, Excel is more user friendly. DO NOT USE MS WORD FOR THIS!

The best thing to do is to type all the titles of the books, and then make a sorting command using ms word or ms excel and then, print it, then arrange them accordingly from the list you have printed...
