You mentioned Singapore, so I have a strong feeling that the coin you are referring to is a 1 cent dated 1943 from Malaya(issued by the Board of the Commissioners of Currency Malaya). It's bronze alloy, square shaped with rounded edges and depicts King George the sixth. I'm not certain how much is the coin being sold in the republic, but according to world coins book, the value for this Type 2 square cent(Type 1 is slightly larger in size) is US$0.45 in nice circulated with some lustre, down to $0.20 in average circulated with no luster. Singapore was part of Malaya and later Malaysia up to 1965 and shared the same currency with her northern neighbour.

You did not mention the coins denomination or country. There were square coins minted for India during the war years, from 1/2 Anna to 2 Annas. Mintage's were high due to World War II and none are scarce. Even in mint state they only sell for a $1 or so here in the United States.. As for Singapore look around there are plenty of coin dealers there.

I usually find coins like that for sale in dealers' "junk" boxes for 10 -25 cents apiece.
