I am trying to sew on an applique I made from fabric. It has that therm o web bonding on the back side. I am using the applique stich on my machine. It started to stitch it and then got stuck in the bottom of the machine where the bobbin is. I took a scrap piece of fabric and it stitches just fine. Why is it doing this? Is the tension not set right? The fabric of the applique is made of cotton blend. Please help.

It's not the tension. You should put your tension back on its normal setting. Therm-o-web is not meant to be sewn, so the problem is that your needle is not penetrating it. It's just pushing everything down through the sole plate instead of piercing it. Therm-o-web is meant to be ironed on both sides, so you could just iron your applique onto the shirt and then cover the raw edge with trims or fabric paint. If you want to sew your applique, make a new one with webbing that's only fusible on one side, not both. Good luck and hang in there!

The commonest problem is that the tension *does* need to be reset for zig-zag appliqué. The tension is also different for sewing through one layer of fabric instead of three or more. I've no idea what the "appliqué" stitch may be on your machine. Hemstitch is also often used for applique.

The bonding stuff *does* also tend to gum-up the sewing machine too, beyond the effect of additional thickness.

Are you using a new sharp needle? A ball-point needle intended for use with knits would not be suitable for this, nor would an old just plain dull needle.

Sometimes it's just easier to settle down and do it by hand. Good hand stitching is as durable as machine stitching.

Try putting paper underneath what you are sewing, ie, between the feed dogs and shirt - sewing should then glide easily.

You need to adjust your tension on your machine.
