does anyone know some good exercises to help increase speed in my hands

One exercise I do is to play paradiddles and doubles on a pillow.

Because the pillow doesn't give you the rebound of a real drum or practice pad it forces you to use your muscles more.

When you go back to a real drum (or pad) you will find yourself stronger and faster.

Do that for about 10 to 15 minutes per day.

Paradiddles, double- and single-stroke rolls are all great exercises that you can do that will not just help with your speed, but the more you practice, the smoother your playing becomes.

In a clinic I saw a while ago, Dennis Chambers recommended practicing rudiments on a pillow; since there's no response from hitting you stick on a pillow (as opposed to a taut drum head) you need to use your strength and control to bring the stick back up again, rather than relying on rebound. Practising each rudiment like this for 15 minutes or so every day will increase your speed, strength and most importantly, stick control in no time at all.

Take a look at Dennis Chambers' article here:

For drumming?

I sure do!

Try some rudiments and paradiddles. Start slow and gradually increase speed. Do this every time you practice.

Also, check out http://www.onlinedrummer.com/ for other lessons and beats that you can use to increase dexterity and speed.

Hope this helps!
