I assume that you mean in the USA.

1. Each party [or independant group] selects their candidate for President and Vice President.

2. They campaign for office.

3. The people in each state vote for their candidate. The winner of each state gets all of the electoral votes from that state. A state's electoral votes equals the number of representatives and senators [2] in that state. For example, if a state has 8 representatives in the house it has 10 electoral votes.

4. The winner is the candidate with who has amassed more than 1/2 the electoral votes.

5. If no candidate has more than 1/2 the electoral votes, the president is chosen by the House of Representatives.
