To tell you the truth, I think it is money, and anything of value. Money is the source of most forms of greed.
I used to think that in a true (not dictatorship such as China) communist society evil would not exist - yet this is not true; such a society can not exist because people will always be greedy.
So through saying that, I can say that humans and their natural instincts are the root of all evil. We are naturally greedy - well most of us - and are willing to do bad things to get what we want.
One other, final, thing (though I apologize for it being off topic) I would like to add is that the most evil of deeds often come from Christian society - people who believe they are doing the will of God just by doing the ritualistic things such as going to church ignoring the true teachings of the bible - it teaches people to be nice and giving, to forgive, and so on. Instead, many people think whatever they do is not evil just because they are a so called 'Christian'.
Anyway, so I can pretty much say that evil roots from many different sources - there is not really a single root. Though I have already said a few things are the root, I would like to conclude that it is not greed or money or Christianity that is the root - it is intelligence. The more we know, the more our greed. Of course, true wisdom can have the reverse effect, yet humans, the most intelligent species on earth, are the only ones truly capable of doing evil things.

One would not commit any evil act if one were to be certain of the ultimate punishment it ought to entail..... on the contrary, the immediate reward is fairly apparent. Greed, insecurity or even idle mind etc. can only beget evil thought.... its enactment depends on the perception of its likely outcome and we are influenced more by the proximate gain than the ultimate misery in the realms of an uncertain future.

Traditionally it was understood that where ever there was evil, money was also involved, does'nt mean money is evil. But i think that more importantly it is selfishness as it pertains to the neglect of others need, not to say that selfishness is evil but rather that we must weight carefully our actions.

Materials are not evil. It is people with evil intentions, greed, bad desires, insatiable wants that cause harms to others.

No single think, we are all animals, however far we evolve our primal instincts will always be instilled in us.
In today's culture, the largest peril to the welfare and peace of our species is the indoctrination of children into religion.

The human brain, obviously.
Our minds have created the concept of evil, and our minds put it into practice.

Women....
We all know Women take money and time so..
Money * Time = Women
And we all know Time is Money so henceforth we have..
Money * Money = Women
(Also)
Money² = Women
So that means you have money squared. And we all know the square root of all evil is money. So thus...
Evil = Women
(Only kidding...)
