The tasmanian wolf is a "Thylacine" and is also known as a tasmanian tiger (because of the strips on its back), and is sometimes called a "Tassie tiger" or "Tazzy tiger" by locals. Although called a "wolf" or a "tiger", it is actually a marsupial, which means it carries its young in a pouch. It is found, or was, found in Tasmania (hence the name). I say "was" found because it's been extinct for almost 65 years. The closest living relative would be the Tasmanian Devil.

The Tasmanian wolf, also known as the Tasmanian tiger or thylacine was commonly found on extreme southern portions of the Australian mainland but most predominantly on the island of Tasmania. However, as of 1936, it is pronounced extinct after the last verifiable specimen died in captivity, a thylacine by the name of Benjamin at Hobart zoo. Since then there have been reports of thylacine sightings in the same areas exclusively near dense forest. Because of this, the thylacine has been a prime target of investigation by cryptozoologists. The tasmania wolf can be described as the size of a medium size dog with canine-like facial features and jaw structure with four medium length legs. Its tail is skinny and long for its body type. Its most distinguishable characteristic is the stripes that go down its lower back starting about midway downs its body.

It is a member of the Thylacine family, the Tasmanian wolf is an animal which looks somewhat like a tiger & somewhat like a wolf. It is found in Australia & some of the oceania islands nearby. It's scientific name is Thylacinus cynocephalus. It's also the latin name meaning "pouched dog with wolf head". The Tasmanian Wolf is believed to have been extinct for nearly sixty-five years. It was actually a marsupial -- the largest carnivorous marsupial in recent times -- and was closely related to the kangaroo and the wombat.

The "Tasmanian" tiger or wolf was once found in mainland Australia, but disappeared after humans brought dingos there thousands of years ago. Probably dingos outcompeted it, as both are wolf-type predators.
Dingos never got to Tasmania, so it survived there until last century, being wiped out by hunting and poisoning.
Some people say it does still survive, either in Tasmania, in very remote areas of mainland Australia, or in New Guinea. There are even a few recent photos -- though most people think these are faked or inconclusive. No recent bodies, skins, hair or other definite evidence have been produced.
If you can find one, apparently there's a reward of A$1.75 million...
Nice if they do turn out still to be around -- but I think sadly the chances are low.

The Tasmanian Wolf or Tasmanian Tiger - Thylacine,
[Thylacinus cynocephalus] is extinct . It is neither a wolf nor a tiger, probably more closely related to the kangaroo than to any other living species
It is NOT related to the Tasmanian Devil.

this is a marsupial, Thylacinus cynocephalus, not a canine, but it's extinct, by obliteration of man,so you won't find it anywhere. this particular marsupial was isolated to Australia, like most were after the mini-ice age. the only marsupial left in north America is Didelphis virginiana, the Virginia Possum.
