coating but several years later the problems continues. The dishwasher is old but seems to work fine. Do I have to get a new washer or can I buy a new basket? Is it even cost effective?

You can buy replacements but if some of the machine is rusting out, you can be sure that the rest of the machine is probably on its last legs. If there is an auction house in your city, check it out. You can buy appliances at 10 cents on the dollar and they are good machines in good condition. These days its usually better to buy new than repair older machines. and... the newer machines are usually more effective and use less electricity and gas.
