The study of oceans.
This includes physical oceanography: Mapping of the ocean floor, the types and properties of currents and waves and how they are produced etc.
Biological oceanography: Determining the laws that govern growth of phyto- and zooplankton in the world' oceans and how and under what conditions carbon is transported from the air to, ultimately, the ocean floor. This is also oceanography's connection to climate research, as the oceans are major carbon sinks.
Chemical oceanography: Deals with the chemical composition of water and what this causes and governs.
