Are there any markings to help do so?

The side which has a color band closest to the end is the left side for purposes of reading the value. Which way the resistor is inserted into a circuit is immaterial.

Resistors have color codes to indicate value and tolerance.
BBROYGBVGW is the color code but it does not matter which side you identify. Resistors and be placed in a circuit in any direction.

the gold or silver ring is the 'left side' on resistors without a (4th) ring, one side is usually more bulgy than the other, that would be the left side.
