Minds are like parachutes. They have to be open to function.

Having said that, in order to lose your sanity, you have to have it first.

Some will argue that sanity is analogous to 'normal'. 'Normal' is a statistical fiction, derived by eliminating all that is interesting and unique in a population, leaving just the 'average'. Sanity is considered as the 'normal' state of being and not requiring medication or therapy. However, I know many sane and 'normal' people who either are in or have been in therapy (or medicated). With today's fashions supporting an immediate reach for the prescription pad, it's hard to see a doctor and NOT be given a pill or liquid of some form.

And, oh by the way, why would you assume an open mind has a gap? Another term for gap, especially when referring to mountainous regions, is a pass. Would you expect your sanity to pass on? Without the rest of you following?

Yes. My sanity fell out of the gap many years ago, but I keep an open mind in case it falls back in again!

No. It is the other way around. For a mind to be open, it must be open to the truth, and open to the exercise of judgement over the truth/falsity of propositions. It is this exercise that allows the mind to keep its sanity.

Sanity is not at home in the closed mind, for sanity is a muscle that the exercise of judgement strengthens, but the judgement of the closed mind is lazy; it does not exercise; it lets others do the main decision-making work for it (for example, religious authorities).

The brain of the closed mind cannot keep sane enough to remain in the cranium. Consider the kinds of closed minds that there are. Gullible minds believe everything. They are closed to the possibility that some things may not be true. In this way, they do not exercise judgement to discern what is truly false. Consequently, they mistaken even falsehoods for truths.

Skeptical minds are even more closed than gullible minds, for skeptical minds resist all beliefs. They are closed to the conviction of belief. In this way, they also are closed to the exercise of judgement which does the convincing. Not only do they miss the truth, but they also mistaken even truths for falsehoods.

The brain of the closed mind is light in weight and floats around in the cranium lazily like a feather that has not learned to discern the weather of belief, and it can float out of the cranium easily.

In life we have to reach decisions and know what we believe in so that we don't end up sitting on the fence which could have gaps in it whereby all our sheep escape and we are left with emptiness inside with nothing to sustain us and we don't know who we are or what we believe in so yeah, right, it's better to not have an open mind too much but know what side your bread is buttered on and which side has the greener grass and so on. Phew!

No, keeping a closed mind would cause the walls to close in on my sanity, subsequently crushing it.
