The new field turf stuff plays just like grass for the most part. I have played on all three. Real grass, hard as a rock astroturf and the new field turf.
The field turf plays the best, it looks and feels just like grass, but the biggest difference between is traction. If you dig or cut on grass, wet or not, it has a tendency to tear up under your feet loosing footing. The field turf never does, you just kick up black rubber from underneath but you keep your footing.
Also, have someone find the stats on concussions. There is a new report that the field turf is safer for concussions. A majority of them happen on the recoil, when the head hits the ground. (ex. trent green last year) apperently the field turf has more give than natural grass and is a better preventative surface.

Depends, Turf is faster but theres the possibility of more cuts(due to Synthetic flooring) and Turf Toe, however Turf is usually in domes soit allows for dry field conditions 365 days a year. With grass, the rainy and wet conditions can cause the grass to get torn up and leave amuddy and slippery field.. But, it ahs a more natural feel and allows for quicker slants and cuts in running patterns... both have their ups and downs

Football should be played on grass only. Turf sucks.

Grass is the only choice. Nothing better than grass in an outdoor stadium. That is how football was intended to be played.

Grass. I prefer sports games that are played in the elements. True character shines when players have to play in the sleet, and mud. Cleats get dirty, grass fields get damaged. Its the way the game been played, no need in taking things out.

You can skid just as much or more on an artificial pitch.. the problem as i see it especially with a huge percentage of injuries being metatarsal, are to do with the design of the boot more then the grass.. the toes go into a crab position so combine that with flimsy boots designed for the footballer to hone his skills more then they are for safety and the simplest of tackles result in fractures / breaks in the foot.

Grass is more forgiving. If you're talking about astro-truf that is the most horrible surface to play on period.
Field turf is alright.

If it's grass vs traditional astroturf, then grass..traditional astroturf winds up being dangerous to athletes in a fall. The newer Fieldturf, however, is superior to grass
