and it doesn't work! (it's a good few years old, have borrowed it from my mother) it's battery powered, and have put new batteries in - nothing happens. anyone know anything about them?

I tried to use one to put name tags on my son's clothes and it burned out after 10 minutes. I think they are not very good.

Junk, don't waste your money. Find an older, metal sewing machine at a thrift store or garage sale. Have it serviced or just clean and oil yourself according to the manual. You've now got something that will serve you for a long time, much better that the new plastic junk they sell today. Don't forget to buy new needles and good quality thread.
