I can't say I've ever seen a cow sit. They lie down to chew the cud. If they're in the open, the weather is probably fine, if it's going to rain they'll usually find some shelter, under a tree or in the lea of a hedge, and are usually close together in bad weather.

Well,having milked cows for allmost 10 years.I can tell you that when a cow is sitting down ... it means the first one of its four stomachs is full.the grass in that stomach is known as "CUD".So now the cow sits down and brings the cud back upp into its mouth and chews it some more then swallows it again.When the cud has been chewed on enough,it is then passed onto the next stomach.
so ...there ya go ....thats the reason they sit down and not to forget that even cows get tired of standing too.

Doesn't it mean it's going to rain. The cows lie down to keep a bit of grass dry

My uncle always told me that when cows are sitting or laying down it means the fish will be biting.. and well fish tend to bite better when the weather is overcast or about to rain.....
Other then that I don't know if it means anything.. I think mostly it's just a wise-tail... But you never know it might have some actual bases..

I've heard if cows are lying down, it's going to rain. However, if only half of them are lying down, then there's a 50/50 chance of rain.

it means they are really tired.
if you see a cow sitting down you can bet its going to be a sunny day. cows use way to much energy to sit and stand back up. It wouldn't make sense as to way they would do that if it was going to rain. happy cows come from california.

Are you mad - I know I am !
If there lying down it will rain if they are walking about they are hungry and if they are on there backs THEY IS DEAD.
Is it true if you take a cow up the wrong-un do you get sucked in? Please help as there's a very nice cow down the field that keeps making eyes at me . . . . . . .
