Arthur Lee & Love, from the mid to late '60s. They were a highly influencial, yet underrated early psychedelic band on the Sunset Strip scene. Although legendary on the West Coast, they never achieved much commercial success, largely due to the fact that they refused to tour, and only recorded a few albums, which received much critical praise. Arthur Lee died less than a year ago, and remained an enigma to the end. I'm not sure where you can find any of their music; their albums are rare collector's items. I'd like to get their stuff on CD if available; you might want to check the Rhino Records catalog, that would probably be the most likely source. Also, look up their bio on allmusic.com. Fascinating history!!!

To Shelly M...
Love was hardly an underground band, having released several highly successful albums and singles on Elektra Records. It wasn't until MUCH later that Arthur Lee decided that he didn't want to have anything to do with touring... for proof of that, check out a few of the Love live releases currently available. Rhino Records (an arm of the Warner Music conglomerate and distributor of Elektra) has several great Love albums available, the most famous of which is FOREVER CHANGES. Hip-O Recordings just released a limited edition three-disc set called THE BLUE THUMB RECORDINGS (one song was co-written by Lee and Jimi Hendrix and features Hendrix on guitar), including one called LIVE IN ENGLAND 1970 (marginal quality, but still worthwhile for the archival significance). My favorite underground band would have to be Jimi Hendrix (guitar), Cliff Burton (bass), Keith Moon (drums), and Johnny Cash (vocals). I'll leave it to you to figure that one out.
