If you like the Dark Tower by Stephen King, then read "The Stand".
It is a wonderful book even though they made a crumby TV serial out of it.

If you haven't already, I definitely recommend reading the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Philip Pullman. I've just finished the second one and can't wait to read the next (got to borrow it from my mate).
If you like epic adventures and fantasy, parallel dimensions, armoured bears, witches and daemons, then these books are awesome! But read them before the film comes out (The Golden Compass) so you can sit smugly in the cinema saying things like, 'oh it didn't happen like that in the book' and 'but i thought Mrs Coulter had dark hair' etc.
Seriously though, these books are excellent. I hadn't read them until now because I'd written them off as children's books but they're not at all; the plots are very sophisticated with a rather controversial theme running through it. The characters are brilliantly portrayed and the story is incredibly compelling. So much so that I would even describe it with that vile word publishers love to brandish in readers' faces as though it actually exists: unputdownable. (Ugh! Now I feel all dirty)
Oh and also if you haven't already, everyone should read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. It's about Robert Neville - the only man left alive in a world overrun with vampires. It's an excellent commentary on solitude and humanity. Plus it's about vampires n stuff which is pretty cool :-D

Hi there.
I wsn't going to get involved in this but damn, you are being recommended some truly awful books!
The guys recommending Lord of the Rings, the "Amber" series and the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are all giving you good advice. For your purposes, "Amber" is the place to start.
I would add to those the first 6 Raymond Feist books (trilogy 1 - Magician, Silverthorn, A Darkness at Sethanon, trilogy 2 -Daughter of the Empire, Mistress of the Empire, Servant of the Empire, these last with Janny Wurts).
This should be enough top-class gear to keep you going for quite a while!
Enjoy, Steve.

Believe me, I know the feeling. I read LOTR and was hooked on fantasy eversince. Have you tried the Terry Goodkind series? You should. As well as Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle and Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising Sequence. :) Happy Reading!

My favorite Stephen King book is "The Stand." If you want a good adventure that'll last you several books, I would try the Belgariad series by David Eddings, starting with the book called "The Pawn of Prophecy."

Try - "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connelly (think thats how his surname is spelt.
Its about a little boy who gets lost in a world of really bizarre things / creatures trying to find his dead mother.
Also "Once" by James Herbert is a very good read too.
