ice normally floats in water so maybe what the question is really getting at is why the substances are ordered in increasing density: acetone < ice < water. when you think about it it's not that strange that a solid sinks in a liquid: solids are usually more dense than liquids. the unusual thing is actually what we think of as the 'normal' situation of ice floating on water, which is caused by hydrogen bonding making the liquid phase quite dense and the solid phase less dense with open, cage-like crystal structure. on the other hand, acetone doesn't have significant hydrogen bonding so it's least dense of the three substances.

Maybe it could be a surface tension effect?

Not all things more dense than water sink in water. Some insects can kinda spread themselves out and use surface tension to keep them above water.

Maybe it is impossible to do something similar with ice in acetone because the surface tension of acetone is so low.

Er.... Molecular structure? okay, at a molecular level, the water particles are packed together, while acetone is not... so the ice is more dense, and thus sinks. Theres no other way to explain it.

Ice molecules don't move that fast, each molecule weight 18.02 atomic mass units (16 for the ogygen and 1.01 time 2 for the two hydrogen). acetone weighs 53.09 amu per molecule (12.03 x 3 for 3 carbon, 16 for one oxygen and 3.03 for the three hydrogen) but is a liquid so its molecule sare alot more spread out. Because of this the tighter packed ice molecules weight more per volume compated to acetone and sink to the bottom of the glass.

Or, they are denser.

The density of ice is .917grms/ cm3 at 0' and acetone is .79.
Water ice floats in water because it is less dense, and it does for that reason alone. It sinks in acetone because it is heavier, and for that reason alone.

It will only sink if you put two ice cubes into it....

Look at the name of the substance... ACETONE...

It's telling you the answer right there.... Ah-cet-one.... "I SAID ONE!!!"
