one famous one in the UK is was the bulk carrier Derbyshire, at 91,654.50 tonnes. she sank with all hands (42 crew and 2 wives) in 1980 in a typhoon

Infact the answer probably lies with bulk carriers - they are inherintly dangerous and liable to break apart and sink rapidly. Between 1980-94 the total losses of bulk and combination carriers was 149, with 1,144 lives lost, and many of these bulkers were well in excess of 100,000 tonnes

Largest Ship To Sink

Titanic had a tonnage ( and I am NOT going to get into gross versus registered vs displacement for all you nit pickers out there...) of about 40,000.

Today's mega cruise ships are from 120,000 to 150,000, so Titanic is a small boat compared to whats out there today.

Several supertankers in the 200,000 ton range have sunk...Amoco Cadiz comes to mind, as well as at least two that blew up in the South Atlantic while empty..gas fumes in tanks ignited while tank cleaning.....

You would also have to add to the list the controlled sinking during weapons testing last year of the hulk of the retired super carrier America...she displaced something in the area of 80,000 tons

so sorry folks, Titanic doesn't even make the top ten.......

I not sure, but, it may have been the Bismark. I know there was a huge Battle Ship, not sure this is it.
OK, check this against the Titanic.
USS Oriskany aircraft carrier

.... for the folks wondering how she’s doing in her current occupation as the world’s largest artificial reef.

As a dive attraction, she is without comparison. There is no way to describe the complete sense of awe experienced when seeing her for the first time. Visiting divers repeatedly expound on the awesomeness of the Oriskany as a dive site. Even divers that have dove the USS Saratoga off of Bikini Atoll (the only other diveable aircraft carrier in the world) are impressed by her, and comment on her immense presence and beauty.

The largest passenger liner to sink was infact Titanic's younger sister the Britannic. She sank in November of 1916 off the coast of Greece as a result of a mine laid by the Germans.
