If u have a friend that has another a/v cable just ask them if u can use it to test your xbox cable, and no microsoft won't charge you they will check for a problem with everything and if they find nothing they will send it back to u with a detailed report of everything they tested and give u possible solutions. Maybe they will find something and they will fix it, but you'll be out of an xbox 360 for a couple of weeks good luck. Also try buying a 3rd party a/v cable for the 360 if no one let's u borrow theirs.

If the sound still works, insert game cd and listen to the intro the game makes. If it does, then it is probably just the cable.
If you send it in for repair they will not charge you just to check, not even if it is just the cable.

If it's still under warranty, I'd take it back to the store where I purchased it and exchange it or you call Microsoft and have it repaired. Since having it repaired means being without your XBOX for a few weeks so I'd just return it and exchange it.

do you know anyone with an xbox that will let you borrow an AV cable for a test ?
other companies than Microsoft make AV cables for the xbox, and they cost less.

you will get a instantaneous adapter for the xbox, yet that's high priced (around a hundred$). yet another determination, is connecting a pc to the xbox and utilising it as a instantaneous adapter with ICS (information superhighway connection sharing) - seek youtube for it in case you have an activity in that. yet another determination could be utilising a swap, that's sort of a "station" for the cable, the place you may connect yet another cable from it on your computing device, yet paying for an prolonged ethernet cable is extra straight forward - you will get one in any everyday computing device / game enthusiasts keep.

Just buy one, test it, if it doesn't work return it to the store and get your money back.
Agents can't just set up a repair if the customer won't do the troubleshooting steps. it's a waste of your time waiting 3 weeks to a month to get your console back and it was just the cords all along.

On the cable, there is a little switch. Its on the part that connects to the 360. You might have slided it to the HD mode, when you don't have a HDTV. Try sliding it to the other half. That might fix it.
