For future references for jobs...let me give you a couple of stories here:

I kept in contact with a lot of my teachers from elementary school, high school, and college. Because of that, I was able to land myself an awesome job in a school when Katrina took my home.

My professor in college gave me a GREAT reference for a job when I relocated to another area in Mississippi.

Keep a good relationship with all of your teachers...they could make you or break you!

There is certainly no requirement that you do so, but unless you were an unusually problematic student, most of us are glad to hear from former students and find out how they are doing. You may need a reference from a former professor or career advice. I get a lot of calls from former students just to tell me that they got into graduate school or got a new job, and I often hear about marriages and children. I also hear from a lot of former students who would like to speak to current classes, or who want to offer jobs to current students.
If you are still a student, but no longer a student of this particular professor, letting him/her know how useful his/her class was in preparation for other courses is always nice.

You can contact professors to let them know how attending their class helped you. I know that professors really like that. Plus, they always respond, and it is easy to do this by e-mail. Just make sure you wait until the grades are out! LOL!!!

Once I contacted a professor to ask him his schedule for the next semester and whether or not I could sit in on his class. He allowed me to, and I learned calculus II for free. After that, I kept doing this to other professors.

I have dropped in on former proffessors either to ask for references, or just to let them know how I was doing. They realy seem to appreciate that.
