because during the first centuries the animals were kept in the house (more like a clay home) the animals slept on the lower level while humans slept on the top and as time went on and we began building 'homes' and putting animals in barns we kept the tradition of sleeping upstairs and living down stairs but not everyone sleeps upstairs i know someone who has a two story and has living room library den even laundry room up stairs and has turned the bottom rooms into bed rooms you have to go though there back door to get to the living room with out going through someones room it is very odd

The bedrooms are upstairs because...............
If they were downstairs, and people were walking around upstairs, we who wanted to sleep while other's were awake,
would hear foot steps accross our ceilings ALL NIGHT LONG!
have you ever lived in a down stairs appt?
Had upstairs noisey nieghbors?
Imagine in your own home, putting the living quarters upstairs and the quiet sleeping area underneath!!!
Noisey!!!
I agree, beautiful views from upstairs, so I would desgin a house that has 2 bedrooms down stairs and 2 upstairs, and a kitchen in the middle of the top plan, upper deck to bb-q, and game room above the garage.
That way when it's warm, i could sleep in cooler lower floors>>>Like in the summer time, and have doors open to deck, and all bedrooms above one another not to disturb sleeping people. Move upstairs in winter, heat rises.
Have a nice outdoor living space upstairs and bbq area, and family room.
Down Stairs, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, Kitchen and sitting area, and a small living room with wash room off to the Garage.
Perhaps a game room downstairs.
So.........you could have the best of both worlds.
excellent question!
design your dream home.......I did, I have yet to find the funds to build it, or where to locate it!!!
have fun with life, live on the 2nd floor, and sleep on the 1st.
you don't have to follow the rules!

The average american household is built with two floors where the most used rooms are placed at the most convinient and accessible area, the First Floor.
The bedroom is usually only used(on average) at night when people sleep. So it would be quite inconvinient to place it downstairs, don't you think?

Don't know for sure but it all comes down to personal requirements, but if you change the locations of your bedrooms and living room then don't expect any smily faces off the people that come and visit you. They may be offended.

its so that when I break into your house, I have a good chance of stealing your tv without waking you.
(It may possibly be due to the fact of why australians sleep downstairs, hot air rises making the upper rooms warmer).

Hi!
Primal instinct. Our ancestors used to climb trees to sleep in order to reduce the risk of being stalked by predators during vulnerable periods when their senses were less alert.
Good wishes.

We feel safer in an elevated position. We can get warnings if thieves enter the house.
