The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) does not allow any homosexual activity in the military. Gays are not allowed to state their sexual preference, or have any intent to engage in homosexual acts reguardless if their partner is in the military or not.

It is time the military caught up with the 20th century let alone the 21st. Many countries do not discriminate against homosexuals in the armed forces. The same rules that apply to heterosexual relationships apply to homosexual relationships. There are no problems with this, it works.

No, they should not change the policy. A person's sexual orientation should not be an issue and it it's not an issue why discuss it? If you are old enough to be in the military, you should be mature enough to deal with this situation but sadly some people aren't so, it would be a good idea to keep it the way it is. Also, in the military, women and men are housed seperately, right? This is for a reason, right? So if gay men and women serve openly, do we need to house them seperately? It's a much more complicated issue than it should be but the don't ask, don't tell policy keeps it pretty simple.

That last bit seems a bit weird.

But generally I assume it has to do with sexuality of any form in the military. You're there to work, not play, I don't think anyone should state their sexual orientation or be allowed to act on it.

Mind you what you do in private should be your own business.

Oh and I think it may have to do with minority status. The military needs conformity, not for soldiers to be individuals and stand out, so it probably has a lot to do with their attempts at homogenization for soldiers.

I am all about gay rights, but I don't think this is an important issue. The military is not about sexuality, it is all about national defense and protection of the free world. What has that to do with "open" sexual activity of any kind? Being open about your sexuality... what exactly does that mean? I live my life and I have sex with who I please... mostly with women. I don't feel the need to shout it over a loud speaker, what I do or who with, so I just say live and let live, and don't stop me from being who I am, or doing what I do. I do not need a stamp of approval from everyone... that is neurotic and unrealistic. If you don't like the rules, just like the catholic church, don't join!

Could also be for their own protection I can't imagine what might happen to a person in the military if they are gay straight people are often victimized if they are perceived as weak or different. Would you feel at safe night or be certain your own guys won't shoot you on the front line?

Long answer... BEST Answer.

I'm active AF. While in Airman Leadership School we used this topic as an ice breaker. The instructor divided the class up into 4 groups (strongly for, for, against, strongly against).

During the discussion everyone argued their individual beliefs until I looked around to realize it broke down as follows: Strongly for: 1 dude, 2 chicks. For: 2 chicks. Against: 2 dudes. Strongly against: 3 dudes.

All but one guy, said it would have a negative impact to operations if the military allowed openly gays in.

MEO requires everyone to feel equally at ease at work. How can that be when greatly over 1/2 the military (military is very highly male) feels it will have a negative impact on the force, productivity, morale, etc?

Politics aside, it just won't work. You can't effectively prosecute a war if you are fighting yourself.

You do know that the military also speaks out against heterosexual coupling as well. Mostly the military, while in uniform, discriminates against all sex, homo, hetero, etc. I'm a firm believer in don't ask/don't tell, mostly because I don't care who you are seeing- keep everything to yourself, regardless of who you're kissing. No one really wants to know, hetero or not.

Because Bill Clinton signed "Don't ask, don't tell" into law when he became president.

You volunteered dude. No one forced you to join. You knew this before you signed. Why are you complaining about this now? You need to live up to the contract you agreed and promised to follow, or get out.
