Why do songs as stupid and meaningless as the "lip gloss" song go on to be huge hits, while music that is well thought out and meaningful is mostly ignored? Are the people in our various societies really as stupid as they seem? Is real art somehow frightening to people?

You know...I am totally amused by what you are saying because I have asked myself the same thing. I think part of the problem is that people are trying to find music that is not typical. I'm sure people were asking the same thing when Elvis arrived on the scene as well.

Each generation seems to see a new and strange genre come on board with some of the stupidest lyrics. You may be too young to remember Edie and the New Bohemians (they were one-hit wonders in the eighties), but, anyway, that song was so stupid and different that it became a hit. People just get tired of the same old stuff, and they choose to listen to goofy stuff from time to time...this will fade eventually only to be replaced with some even stupider lyrics.

I'm not sure what the answer to your question is, though I would love to know it. My theory is that people don't like to think. That would be why People magazine sells so well: lots of pictures, few words, inane topics. Personally, I love classical more than any other genre of music because I consistently hear more good stuff in it- interesting compositional techniques, a full range of human emotion instead of just love. Yet, few people love the stuff I love, thinking that classical is "boring." Even though it really is great, it is music that is not easily digestible and has to be listened to with much more of a spirit of concentration than popular.

It's sad to say, but I think the sad truth is that people either are not as smart as they claim to be, or are pretty smart but are too lazy to do anything that requires the slightest intellectual effort.

exellent question, i agree with you completly. the music these days really does suck and i think that the people in society just like what the media tells them to like because the average person is too stupid to think to themselves maybe this music sucks! i listen to all types of music but mostly classical. lately though i have been listening to Ray Lynch music. he is an amazing composer. well anyway i do wish people these days could figure out the good things in this world and take a moment to smell the frickin flowers!

Hi there. People are vulnerable to the trends of the day and if they hear say the same type of music long enough their brains are programmed to automatically embrace it and any new or other music is rejected. That's the beauty of synthetic disposable pop or whatever you call it .It keeps repeating itself over and over until they are brainwashed into believing they are hearing quality vocals/music.
