Hi there .One of the best movies based on a novel was the epic film GIANT made in 1956 from the novel by Edna Ferber. Starring Elisabeth Taylor,Rock Hudson and James Dean.Giant is a movie of huge scale and grandeur in which three generations of land -rich Texans love, swagger, connive and clash in a saga of family strife, racial bigotry and conflict between cattle barons and newly rich oil tycoons.

We Were Soldiers was a great book and a great movie and of course The Lord of the Rings series. The Notebook was good but they got the ending wrong in the movie.

The Godfather, hands down in my opinion.
Runners-up include GoodFellas, From Russia With Love, and Silence of the Lambs.

'the color purple' was the best novel-to-movie transition i've seen done successfully....the movie was better than the book....
a close runner-up for me is....'freedom writers' which was actually better than the book...great movie!!
'beloved' was the worst...the book was awsome and won pulitzer prizes but was too intricate to be successfully made into a movie!

I LOVE The Notebook. I actually like the movie better though, for various reasons, but both are excellent.
