I got the idea for this question after answering a metallica question.

Why do you think that some bands like Motorhead, The Cure, Dio/Sabbath, Iron maiden, Pearl Jam, Megadeth etc.. can continue to rock the same way they did 20 years ago, but then bands like Metallica and Korn suck so bad after being the Biggest Bands on the planet? Could it be you can't top going that high? or maybe the luxuries that come with it?

Because bands like Motorhead and Dio don't CARE what's trendy or popular now - they go out and rock and if you don't like it, it's YOUR problem. Bands like "metal-licka" wanted to sell albums and appeal to the younger kids, so they didn't stay true to who they were.

Some bands change their style and then start to suck and some stay the same and become stale. Heart and Meatloaf both used song writers to stay fresh, at least for a little while longer.

I don't think Metalica was that good. They had a couple of praised recordings, lost focus, put out a recording full of covers in order to stall and then couldn't come up with anything else. Korn was hated by people from the start. The earlier bands you mentioned had a loyal following. When I was in shool back in the 70s and 80s, several people would just wear concert shirts from the bands you mentioned. Metalica and Korn never had that loyal of an audience. I would also add in Tool (I loved Undertow, but hated the following stuff).

I also think drugs could have played a part too. Some people can handle them, and some people just go through a meltdown.

None of these bands you named had the potential for longevity in the first place! They were repetitive and derivative and lacked in originality and versatility.

There is a VAST difference between these imitators, and the innovators. Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, ELO.....now THESE guys were the true essence of rock n' roll!!!!!!

That's just the way it is. Some bands live forever, while others just enjoy a "golden age." P.S. Korn? Really now, were they ever any good?
