I have a paper to write & I think it'd be great to learn why it is that people write about anything.

Don't be brief! :)

I think that the first answer is invalid. You can very definitely get in trouble for what you write. In school, at work, in politics, etc.

I write because my ideas are sacred, and words are the greatest power of the people. Our world and our words are based on our ideas, and without them, where would we be?

They can identify romance, define the shrill depths of our fears, send you to fantasies and adventures that nobody has ever even seen.

Writing is the symbol of our words of our ideas of our perspective of our passions. What more would you ever want?

I write because I love it! Also because I have to. I don't mean that I am being made to, or that I have to for work, school etc. I mean that there is something inside me that says start that story, put those words down (for the beginning of a poem), release those characters. Like this:

Chasing Dragons

My mind’s a place of whimsical thought
Where I retreat when the need arises
Where the understanding of a moment
Is ever lost within surprises

There are many twisting, confusing paths
Where I may stumble around for days
And others that quickly pass to the end
Without noticing much along the way

There are ships to sail and dragons to slay
Or other planets that I may explore
I could save the day in other ways
Just by opening a different door

I could be a damsel in distress
Or the heroine of a fantasy
In my little world of whimsical bliss
There is nothing I could not achieve

Yet practical thought is also a choice
When there’s just not enough time to play
But I must admit that I would prefer
To chase dragons for the rest of my days

I write because I enjoy creating my own world. I write fantasy and sci fiction because I am not primarily interested in the day to day problems of people in this one. Regular type fiction with real type people would be very boring for me to read or write about.
In the fantasy that I have created, I can create people (characters ) different races and species, magical abilities, countries and villains. I can create unique names and words, sort of like a language for that place without having to create all of the language or grammar, but enough to give people an idea of the sound of it. I enjoy thinking about what my characters would do, and have seem them become very real and change over time like real people do. So for me writing is about creative expression and very creative. I have put a lot into thinking about my characters motives and how their different cultures would make a person different. For instance some of my characters have a very long life span so they think rather differently than a human would and they do not really relate to the human characters.
So for me writing is also sort of playing God. At least it lets me play at being God in my own created world without messing with the one that the real God created. lol.
I hope that I have created a world that others will enjoy exploring and traveling in.

I write because I like to keep record of some moments in my life, of some ideas I have. I write many different things. Poetry, short stories, I keep a dream journal (I have a blog). Some things I write are autobiographical. Sometimes I just feel the need to put on paper what I think, because it's like a story being written.

I write for three reasons.

1) To get my point across. I have very unique views on life. Thus, when dealing with new people, it is sometimes necessary to defend my unique view.
- It is often necessary, thus, to write a long & detailed explanation of the background & reasoning by which I defend my position on any number of issues/ideas.

2) As we age, we forget. We forget who we were in the past. Of course, we remember in very general terms who we were. And remember detail about some specific events, but we do not remember very completely who we were.
- I therefore write, in part, to preserve for my future self, my present/past self.
Years from now, I will be able to 'look back' at who I was, and ponder that.

3) I will die. The only thing that is likely to live on, of me, after I die, is my writing.
- This may be of some interest to my family, in the distant future.
- Or, it may be of interest to archaeologists in the far distant future, as they try to understand who we were at this time in history.

It makes me feel better! One day some of my writtings will be read and possibly understood, I'm sure most of it is over the above average persons head, I can barely understand/comprehend some things myself but I give it my all to try, explaining things to others is easier to write than to try to explain orally, for me anyway. I have my moments though, I can go months without writting a word, unfortunately something has to slap me in the face to get the process started.

sometimes u have so much knowledge and till u write it down systematically on a topic, u realize how much u know.
writing also tells u about ur own mental thought processes. the order of paragraphs, the sensibility etc are all clues to u when u read ur own work later on about ur present state and how it affected ur writing and views in that particular paper.
people also write down things important to them because writing has a feeling of permanancy to it, so that some important thoughts are not lost .

Writing is my passion actually. I want to be an author someday. I write because it is a great way of expressing myself. It also lets me enter whatever world I want to. I get to create the enviroment, the people, the setting. Everything. Writing is a form of art to me.
