Well, actually in vitro did exist in the late 1970's and it was considered 'test tube babies' then. I believe it was in England the first IVF baby was born-and I think the girl's;s name was Louise.
But-yes-it would be possible to conceive at age 56 if the woman's body has not gone through menopause yet. I have heard of many stories of women thinking they were going through menopause in their 50's, and it turned out they were pregnant. All it takes is healthy sperm, and a healthy egg. While advanced age is certianly a huge factor against conception, it can happen. Have you done any research on the statistic of women in their 50's giving birth without the aid of fertility treatments? I bet you'll find a lot of information. I'm curious as to why you are having doubts?

The only way your mother could have had you at age 56, is if she was still getting her period. She may not have gone through menopause yet. It is very possible. You could have been what is called a change of life baby. I have seen it with women in their late 40's and occasionally early 50's. Every woman's body is different. I have also seen the reverse, some women going through menopause in their early 30's.
Also, do you look like your family? maybe you were adopted. I'm not trying to freak you out, you may have thought of this already.
by the way, I believe the first test tube baby was born in 1978, You could also be a laboratory baby.

I believe that the oldest known confirmed pregnancy at that time was 57 years old.
So if she was still having period and ovulating then theoretically yes she could.

I suppose anything is possible, but the real question is WHY would you want to?
Maybe you are adopted?

I dont think that a woman can produce at that age, but it is possbile for them to carry a child at that age, if that makes any sense to you.
