i am not excatly sure to much about Murray Riding mowers i work on Johndeere and cub cadet but on both of those they are around the fly wheel. ...and about the chainsaw . i have had 2 or 3 saws come in to my shop with scorched blade. and that was from not using lubrication. any oil will basically work just the thicker kind. u should be alright there..

The alternator is under the flywheel. It sounds more like you have a wiring problem. The reason the starter kept running is that the solenoid stuck. On most of these mowers the lights only come on when the engine is running. I think that you need a wiring diagram and get the wiring back the way it was meant to be.
