I just finished an inquiry on landmines, and thus, landmine victims. I was on a page about amputees and there was a link on Wikipedia about Amputee fesitish's. It sounds like he has the disorder, Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). I then read a few stories on BBC news website about people who have amputated their own limbs and paid for surgery etc. Some people did feel better after they had amputated a limb, but even so I think you should try and talk him out of it! Check out: http://www.biid.org/ .

Maybe your friend is keeping a secret from you because if there is really no need for an amputation, I'm preety sure he would not like to be a handicap. Above knee amputation will increase his energy expenditure, about 70%. And prothetic fitting will take long, the wound still have to heal. Talk to your friend maybe he has bigger problems.

I saw a show on discovery about this and its a documented psychological disorder. It's like having bulimia or being anorexia. I would make sure your friend sees a psychiatrist or a psychologist. This is a mental problem or issue. Your friend needs to spend the money on getting some help first and see if that can help.

There are so many things one can do with 10K, but what kind of thing is amputating ones foot? I hope your friend realizes that the decision is permanent and he/she would have to live with it for the rest of their life. Instead of spending 10 grand amputating, I suggests he uses the money for a psychiatrist.

Sound to me like your friend has Body Dsymorphic Disorder. It is a mental illness in which the person feels like some part of their body is wrong or doesn't belong. Before he does something so drastic your friend should see a psychiatrist. Perhaps there is a treatment to help.

Sounds like your friend needs serious mental help. I was crushed by an 18 wheeler 22 months ago and was supposed to be amputated at the waist, but thankfully, my lower body could be saved.
Tell your friend to be grateful for what he has, because he can't undo his actions.
I wish you all the luck in talking him out of this.
God Bless

I have read in a medical book that this is a disease, however i cannot remember the name of it sorry.
Definitely tell him to go to the doctor, they will do it but in years he will definitely regret it!
