they were tokens given out at things like fairs and such, they were wood, about the size of a half dollar and had the value of a nickle at the fair, no value elsewhere, if you found one from something like the texas state fair or the worlds fair in the early 1900s or late 1800s it might have some collectors value, often the term , dont take any wooden nickles meant dont get cheated because if you had wooden nickles left after the fair you couldnt cash them in anywhere.

I do not collect them but know a little. I know they go back to at least the 1930's for I have seen some that old. During the 1950's some events were celebrated by having wooden flats made, that Had a nickel value on them. Most today are round and about the size of a quarter or a little larger. They are used to advertise and to commemorate events where a medal or token would be to expensive to have made. There is a collectors club, as well as www.wooden-nickel.com, they will make them up for you. type in wooden nickels into a search engine and you will learn more. hope this sends you in the right direction.

A lot of people use wooden nickles as trade or signature items for geocaching. There are websites that will create personalized wooden nickles with your own design or logo on them.
